This is a nasty, kick ass Stones song that in my opinion is very underrated.

The lyrics have a country/western feel to them--with Mick singing about gunning down a rival and 'putting him underground'. Then trying to blaze town with cops on his trail..but his lucks runs up as the "Hand of Fate" finally catches up to him.

Gamblers and dudes who like to live on the edge, toying with fate....can probably all relate to this tune. Eventually, your luck runs out and you have to pay the piper.

The studio version has legendary Alabama blues session guitarist Wayne Perkins playing lead guitar, filling in for the recently departed Mick Taylor.

Perkins, a finalist for the second Stones guitar job that would eventually go to Ronnie Wood, shreds to a degree rarely (if ever) seen on a Stones song either before or after.

I know that's controversial, but I suggest you listen to the studio version and find out for yourself.

Below is a vintage, vintage video from their Black and Blue tour of 1976 at the Olympia in Paris.

This is the height of Keith's heroin years--he is literally a dead man walking, rumored to have had his entire blood stream drained and replaced at a clinic in Switzerland before the tour started to merely have a chance of being able to perform.

He will be busted in a few months in Toronto with so much heroin on him that he was charged as a dealer.

This is also the time that marks Ronnie Wood's emergence as the replacement to Mick Taylor. He's still technically in The Faces with Rod Stewart, but will soon formally quit that band to work solely with Stones.

Controversially and some say unfairly, Mick will wait another decade to make Wood a permanent, fully paid, 'real' Stone.

Although Heroin is clearly the choice for Keith during this time, a look at Mick and Ronnie's faces and actions in this video makes clear that blow is their choice of drug.

A few years later Wood would have surgery to have a graphite septum placed between his nostrils, the product of years of unconstrained cocaine abuse.

Wow, I just finished listening to Pet Sounds from start to finish for the first time in probably five years and I feel like I've been hit with a bolt of lightening.

The melodies and harmonies that Brian Wilson creates on this are literally from another world--I mean better than the McCartney and Lennon if you ask me.

The musical arrangments are incredibly subtle and unique--all sorts of weird knick knacks that just again are created from another planet.

And that's not even mentioning the heart-rendering, yearning, pleading lyrics that he sings. Extraordinarily poignant, touching....deep, sad, joyous...a young man becoming an adult. Whew. Amazing.

Do y0urself a favor. Throw it on the turntable. Send yourself into outer space.
